Fair Oaks Volunteer Fire Department continues tradition with annual fish fry, auction fundraiser

The Fair Oaks Volunteer Fire Department’s longtime tradition of a fish fry and auction is coming up this Saturday, March 16.

Fair Oaks Fire Chief Doug Kennon said the auction began many years ago after the late Kenneth Witcher proposed it as a way to raise money for the department.

“We were having a hard time raising money. Kenneth Witcher told us one time you ought to have a fish fry auction. He said he would do the auction for us, and he did it until he got sick,” Chief Kennon said. “The fire department has been there since 1988, and it wasn’t just a few short years after that we started doing the auction. We bought more supplies for the auction than we made off the auction at first.”
The fish fry will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday with the auction starting at 6:30 p.m.

“We have a variety of a lot of stuff. You’ll be surprised by what we’ve got out there,” Chief Kennon said. “We had a lot of items last year and it really helped us. Last year was probably our best year we’ve ever had.”

The proceeds raised will go into the Fair Oaks Fire Department’s general fund.

“You’re always buying turnouts, your gloves, helmets, boots, upkeep on the trucks,” Chief Kennon said.

Tickets are $10 for adults for the fish fry, and $5 for children 5-12 with under 4 free.
