The Wynne City Council has given formal approval for the creation of a Wynne youth council. Aldermen approved a resolution last night establishing the youth council, which will be done in partnership between the city and Wynne School District.

“(It’s an) opportunity for the kids to do some community service, but then really learn about how government works at the local level and the importance of it,” said Wynne Mayor Jennifer Hobbs. “(We’re) trying to really help create those future leaders. We need people that know what they’re doing and show an interest that want to step up and be future city councilmen and future mayors and even public works and fire department and police department and parks and rec… all the different aspects of what it takes to run our city.”

The youth council will include four students from each grade 8-12, and will be application-based. Youth council members are expected to regularly attend meetings of the Wynne City Council.

In other news, the Wynne City Council approved the appointment of Tracy Singleton to the Wynne Planning Commission, replacing Kathy Huffman. Brenda Smith was reappointed to the commission.

Aldermen also received department reports; heard from Freddie Smith who was representing a group of pastors, who want to be more actively involved in city government; and recognized the retirement of Dale Williams from Wynne Public Works. Williams spent more than 20 years with the Public Works department, spending the last three years as foreman.
