WYNNE — The Wynne School Board approved the calendar for the 2027-28 school year during its regular monthly meeting Thursday.
The meeting was delayed by several days due to this week’s regional volleyball tournament.
The first day of the school year will be Tuesday, Aug. 10, with the final day of school set for Thursday, May 25. Graduation for the Class of 2028 is planned for Saturday, May 20.
The dates for fall break are from Monday, Oct. 11, through Friday, Oct. 15, 2027. Thanksgiving break is from Monday, Nov. 22, through Friday, Nov. 26, 2027, with winter break beginning Monday, Dec. 20, 2027. The spring semester will start on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2028, with spring break set for Monday, March 20, through Friday, March 24, 2028.
The full calendar is available on the Wynne School District’s website.
The 2027-28 school year will also be the first in the new Wynne High School. The former high school building was destroyed in the March 31, 2023, tornado.
Wynne Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Moore said progress is continuing to be made on the new facility, with glass set to go up for two of the wings within the next month. Moore said when that happens, the building will be 95 percent in the dry. It will be completely “in the dry” once the roof is finished on the south side of the building.
Moore said the lack of rain in recent months has helped the project stay on track and get slightly ahead. He said some painting has already started inside the building, on the second floor and the stairwells.
In other news, the Wynne School Board:
Received a high school data presentation. High school principal Dusty Meek discussed test scores as well as the Arkansas ACCESS Act, which has helped to increase the number of students graduating with both a high school diploma and an associate degree. Moore said that two years ago, two Wynne High School graduates simultaneously earned their associate degrees through UA-EACC in Forrest City. Last year, that number increased to seven. This year, about 30 students are on track to graduate with two degrees.
Approved a school board election resolution and the proposed budget for the election. Moore said there is not a school board election this spring. However, the district is still required to put its millage on the ballot despite there not being any change to the millage. Moore was also appointed as the district’s delegate to vote in the election.
Approved a list of retiring assets, including several school buses that were sold at auction and three computers removed from inventory.
Approved an Act 1599 resolution. Act 1599 requires school districts to disclose any potential conflict of interest with companies they do business with. E.C. Lyons, the son of assistant superintendent Stephanie Lyons, is an employee of Rightfiber.
Approved the consent agenda (minutes of the preceding meeting, September financial reports, the student enrollment report, and continued participation in the Arkansas Public School Unemployment Compensation Account with David H. Frieze Associates Inc.).
The Wynne School Board will next meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9. A tour of the high school construction will precede the meeting, starting at 5 p.m.
