Cherry Valley adopts new electronic read meter policy

Law enforcement updates, fire department personnel changes also announced

The Cherry Valley City Council has approved a new electronic read meter policy as the city adopts the new technology.

The policy was unanimously approved during the council’s February meeting. The policy reads as follows:

  • If a meter is broken or damaged and is caused by the owner, tenants, or occupants of the premises the cost of repair or replacement is to be charged to the customer. All costs must be paid within 30 days or services will be shut off until paid in full.
  • No person shall turn off or turn on water except in an emergency.
  • All new meter sets are required to have a shut-off valve installed on the customer side.
  • Failure to pay the amount owed for damages will result in the owner, tenants or occupant to be charged with criminal charges in Cross County District Court – Cherry Valley Division.
  • Any water accounts are required to be in the name of the current occupant(s) name. Accounts not in the current occupant(s) name are required to be changed within 30 days. Failure to do will result in services being shut off until the proper paperwork is completed.

In other news, Police Chief Jamie Walls reported the Cross County Sheriff’s Office is possibly selling a 2014 Dodge Charger, and he is interested in purchasing it as a backup unit. A drone was also donated to the police department for use in searching for missing persons, patrolling the solar panels, and other uses.

Several personnel changes have been made in the Cherry Valley Fire Department. Fred Schweighart will retire on March 1 after 37 years of service. Captain Josh Caughron has been promoted to assistant chief. Lieutenants Michael Milholland and Tyler Walls were promoted to captains, and Chief Engineer Adam Timze to lieutenant.

The council also approved a quote of $1,186.93 for access points for the city hall and the fire station.
