Blake Sorey said he had an OK first year as head coach of Wynne Yellowjackets baseball. The Jackets finished 10-7 overall, 4-4 in league play last spring.
“We set some goals – some low goals – and we reached most of them,” Sorey told KWYN. “We came up a little bit short in the district tournament, a little shorter than we wanted to. I thought our guys for the most part got better as the year went on.”
Sorey said his team has been hard at work since December, trying to improve on their skills.
“We lifted weights all summer and did some training in the fall. We also played a fall world series, and then we’ve been after it since we got back from Christmas break,” he said. “Our guys have really started to buy in. We’ve worked hard up until now and are now just anticipating the season. We’ll see what happens once we get there.”
With only two seniors on the roster, Sorey said the Jackets are a relatively young team, but they aren’t without experience.
“I think we’ve got eight juniors. Most of them played last year. We had a couple with some bumps and bruises. A lot of those guys got experience last year. Some of them even played as freshmen,” he said. “So there’s a lot of experience in that junior group. Our two seniors both got significant playing time last year as well. We say that we’re young because a lot of our kids are juniors, sophomores, and even freshmen, but our guys have a lot of games played under their belts.”
Sorey said one of the team’s weaknesses last season was with finishing games.
“We’d get comfortable and let teams that didn’t have any business hanging with us, hang us. They may have even beat us. I’m hoping this year we’ll be able to finish some games,” he said. “I would love to finish in the top three; the top four is fine too. Ultimately, all of us want to win the conference.”
