WYNNE — Over 100 school districts will not have school on Eclipse Day Monday. One of those is the Wynne School District.
“[I-40 and 55] are two shots, but then after that 64 is the next straightest shot (to the area with the greatest totality). Only being a two-lane highway there was a lot of discussion that with a million people potentially coming in it could get really backed up,” said Wynne Schools Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Moore. “They really encouraged to not travel if at all possible during those times. We went back to the PPC and asked them what do you want to do. The calendar is really a PPC calendar. … We don’t want to take a chance of sending a bus to the west side of the county and then can’t get to the houses.
“It’s almost like the tornado we’re kind of in a guessing game,” Dr. Moore added. “At this point, it’s not worth taking that gamble when we’ve got April 22 off anyway. They wanted us to take to the board to swap April 22 as a day out of school and put it to April 8, and let the eighth be the day off and then we don’t even have to worry about it.”
Cross County Schools will be open on Monday.
Among the other schools out on Monday are McCrory; Armorel; Bald Knob; Batesville Southside; Corning; Greene County Tech; Guy Perkins; Heber Springs; Highland; Lonoke; Midland; Mountain Home; Newport; Palestine-Wheatley; Paragould; Piggott; Rivercrest; Riverview; Rose Bud; Salem; Trumann; Vilonia; and Greers Ferry Westside.
The eclipse begins at 10:07 a.m. Central time in Mexico and ends at 2:30 p.m. in Maine. The eclipse will be from around 1:45 p.m. to 2 p.m. in Arkansas, and it will last just over two minutes, 2:11.
