The Wynne School Board discussed a letter from the City of Wynne mayor’s office during a special meeting last night. Wynne Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Moore said he was served the letter by Wynne Mayor Jennifer Hobbs during a recent meeting.
The letter stems from recent damage to Lemons Street from work trucks at the temporary high school site. The letter cites a city ordinance that pertains to load capacity for vehicles on the road and demands such vehicles cease operating on city streets other than designated truck routes such as Arkansas Highway 64 and Highway 1.
Dr. Moore said he felt blindsided by the letter as he had previously had discussions with Mayor Hobbs that those roads would be repaired.
Board members voiced concerns over the perceived breakdown in communication between the district and the mayor’s office. They also noted that many heavy-duty trucks, the district’s fleet of school buses, and even the city’s garbage trucks violate the ordinance.
City Attorney Kevin Watts attended last night’s meeting and said he would take the board’s concerns to the Wynne City Council. The school board has requested a letter from Mayor Hobbs that school buses would be exempt and not be stopped for being in violation, adding there is the possibility that school could be postponed until the matter is resolved.
In other news, the Wynne School Board approved legal transfers into and out of the district and a change to the NewStart/ALE director’s contract days from 215 days to 200 days.
