Wynne Junior High principal addresses school’s performance on state report card

Pledges focus on attendance, academic growth initiatives

The Wynne School Board heard from junior high school principal Josh Wingo last night on the latest state report card.

Wingo said receiving a D on the report card felt like a “gut punch.” He noted the school fell 1.5 points, just under a C. Wingo said one of the things the school will be focusing on is attendance. Currently, students are allowed a total of 16 absences, but schools are scored based on how many absences students accrue. Wingo said the school plans to make attendance more of a priority.

Wingo also gave an update on NWEA growth and ACT Aspire data. He talked about some of the things WJHS is doing to improve test scores including new courses offered for credit, inclusive education, and Atlas bootcamp. The school also introduced a Flight period that includes advisory Mondays, passion projects, enrichments, and interventions.

In other news, the board discussed a potential retreat next Tuesday, Oct. 24, and tabled discussions on a new weapons detection system at all campus due to cost.

Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Moore said he would pursue other options.
