WYNNE — Wynne firefighters responded to an out-of-control brush fire shortly before 3 p.m. Monday on County Road 7015. The caller advised the fire was spreading into the woods.
A moderate wildfire danger remains in Cross County, according to the Arkansas Forestry Division’s website, arkfireinfo.org.
Aaron Mears, fire prevention coordinator for the Wynne Fire Department, said residents should remain vigilant when choosing to burn.
“Yard fires can get away from people so quickly, especially in a big residential neighborhood,” Mears said. “Be sure that if you are going to burn your yard, you need to have some sort of water source that you can extinguish the fire with or cut a fire line all the way around your property. Something to keep it from spreading to your neighbor’s fence or their house.”
Mears said the individual who started the fire will be held responsible for any damage caused to neighboring property.
“You can always tell where the fire came from,” he said. “If someone lit a fire somewhere on the north side of the town, but it spread throughout the entire city, we can pinpoint exactly where it started. There’s no hiding it. You will be 100% solely responsible for all the damages that may occur. Please be mindful, and be careful.
“If it’s 20 mph winds, it’s probably not a good day to burn,” Mears added. “If it’s calm, steady winds, absolutely. You can manage that fire a lot better, but a wind-driven fire is dangerous.”
