Wynne baseball Yellowjackets gear up for district tournament opener

JONESBORO, Arkansas — The Wynne baseball Yellowjackets are ready for the post-season.

The jackets will open play in the 4A-3 district tournament today (Tuesday) at Jonesboro Westside.

“We did some really good things this season,” said Wynne baseball coach Blake Sorey. “You know we finished up the regular season 10-9. There’s a few in there that I wish we had back. I think we easily could have been a little bit better on the winning side, but I’m proud of the way we finished the season anyway.”

The Jackets are the third seed in the tournament and knew they would be playing at 6:30 p.m. today. What they didn’t know was their opponent.

That was determined last night when Jonesboro Westside beat Truman, 7-6.

Coach Sorey said he tried to do what he could to get his team ready for an unknown opponent.

“We’re just going to go through the basics, kind of dumb some things down,” he said prior to Monday’s practice. “Go through some things that I felt like we needed to work on, just some fundamental things. Things you don’t think about on a daily basis. We played both of them early in the season so we’ve got some stuff on them from there.”

Sorey said he also planned to attend last night’s Westside-Trumann game.

As we have reported, the Wynne Lady Jackets are the top seed in their district tournament. The Lady Jackets are also waiting to find out their opponent in the semifinals, which are set for 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Wynne will play the winner of today’s game between Batesville Southside and Pocahontas.
