West Memphis planning new fare-free transit system

WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. — West Memphis is planning a new transit system called “West Memphis Connect.”

The West Memphis City Council approved an ordinance earlier this month establishing the system.

The ordinance states the service will be funded through multiple sources, including grants and city general funds.

According to the ordinance, the transit system will operate as a fare-free pilot service through December, followed by a $2 fee beginning Jan. 1.

West Memphis Mayor Marco McClendon will appoint a director of operations to oversee the system.
