MARION, Ark. — The Sultana Disaster Museum in Marion has set the grand opening date for its new state-of-the-art museum. It will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14.
The Sultana Historical Preservation Society began work on the old Marion High School gym about five years ago.
The original goal was to open the new museum on April 27 of last year, which was the 160th anniversary of the sinking of the Sultana. That was delayed due to repairs needed to the building and a delay in materials.
The Sultana Disaster Museum tells the story of the deadliest maritime disaster in U.S. history. Around 1,200 people were killed when the steamboat exploded and sank in the Mississippi River near Memphis.
