Poinsett County man drowns; brother arrested during recovery efforts

HARRISBURG, Ark. — The Poinsett County Sheriff’s Department said a 30-year-old man drowned yesterday in the Rivervale area, and his brother was taken into custody after becoming disruptive with law enforcement during the recovery efforts.

The Poinsett County Sheriff’s Department said a call was made to 911 about 6 p.m. yesterday regarding the possible drowning. Deputies with the sheriff’s department, Poinsett County Search and Rescue, and officers from the Lepanto police and fire departments were dispatched to the area.

First responders were able to recover the body of 30-year-old Trevonte Smith from the water. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His body will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab to determine the manner and cause of death.

The sheriff’s department said Smith’s brother, Keltric Smith, attempted to get past law enforcement and struck a deputy and damaged a vehicle in the process. He was booked into the Poinsett County Detention Center in Harrisburg on charges of second-degree assault and criminal mischief.
