JONESBORO, Arkansas — The Wynne Lady Jackets will play the host Jonesboro Westside Lady Warriors in the championship game of the district tournament tomorrow (Friday) at 5 p.m.
The Lady Jackets will be no worse than the second seed from the district headed into next week’s regional tournament at Pulaski Robinson.
Wynne beat Batesville Southside in a district tournament semifinal game yesterday 6-5 while Westside beat Brookland in a later game 3-1.
“The last time that we played Batesville Southside we beat them 15-2 and it looked like it was a blowout, but it was a really hard win,” said Lady Jackets coach Ashley Busby. “The last time that we played them it was a 3-2 ballgame going into the 5th inning. We just kept putting the ball in play and they were making errors so we knew that this was going to be a tough game going in and we came out with a win.”
Ally Glover pitched all seven innings for Wynne allowing five runs, three earned on seven hits, one walk, and two hit batters. Katie Hodges was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored. Savannah Brown was 1-for-3 with one run scored. Mary Ashtyn Gilbreath was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Caty Moore was 1-for-2 with three runs scored and two walks. Katie Hodges, Caty Moore, Caetlyn Tansy, and Lanie Homan all recorded stolen bases for the Lady Jackets yesterday.
Busby said she wants the stands packed for what will be a high-pressure situation tomorrow.
“We just have to perform well under pressure and tomorrow’s game is going to be a high-pressure game,” she said. “We’re playing Westside at Westside. They’re going to have a home crowd. They’re familiar with their field. … We’re going to have to go in and be able to prepare and perform under pressure.”
The Cross County Thunderbirds will play Riverside in a semi-final game today in the 2A-3 district tournament at Buffalo Island Central. The T-Birds advanced with an 8-4 win over East Poinsett County on Tuesday. They also qualified for regional tournament play with the Tuesday win.
