WYNNE — The Wynne Lady Jackets punched their ticket for a return trip to this week’s 4A state tournament with a win last week over Little Rock Christian in the 4A East Regional. The rest of the tournament wasn’t as successful for the Lady Jackets.

Wynne dropped their semifinal game to conference rival Brookland and then fell to Clinton in the consolation game.

“That first game was a big one. I know there were a lot of nerves in that game,” said Wynne softball coach Ashley Busby. “At that point in the season, it’s either you’re in or you’re out. We were happy to get the win.

“We knew that Brookland was going to be a tough game,” Busby added. “Whenever we played them at home, we beat them 3-2, and we threw out the tying run at home. We knew they were going to be tough and they were.”

Busby said her team has struggled with waiting until late in the game to rally. That’s something they are working on ahead of the state tournament.

“We’re kind of waiting until the last minute to get things out. We’re going to have to get a sense of urgency earlier in the game and not wait until we’re down to the last three outs,” she said. “At this point, everybody is good, and we’ve got to stay intense all 21 outs. We’ve got to be productive with everything. We can’t afford to have any mental lapses.”

The Lady Jackets play Malvern at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday) in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament at Gravette.
