WYNNE — KWYN recorded a 100-degree high temperature Sunday for the first time in nearly three years.
The last 100-degree high temperature was recorded on Aug. 27, 2023. That 100-degree day capped off a run of three straight days of at least 100 degrees.
August 2023 had seven days of temperatures at or exceeding 100 degrees. In fact, some of the hottest days on record kept by KWYN since September 1956 were in August 2023, including 103 degrees on Aug. 22 and 102 degrees on Aug. 4 that year.
KWYN has been the official recording station for the National Weather Service since going on the air in September 1956.
Burn bans expanding
Cross County is one of just a handful of Arkansas counties not currently under a burn ban.
According to the Arkansas Forestry Division, 64 of the state’s 75 counties are under an active burn ban.
Cross County is one of just 11 counties not under a ban, as of press time. Other counties currently without a burn ban include St. Francis, Mississippi and Phillips, with the others scattered throughout the state.
Crittenden County went under a burn ban Monday morning. Other surrounding counties including Craighead, Poinsett, Jackson, Lee, Monroe and Woodruff, were already under a burn ban.
The entire state is at least at a moderate risk, a two out of four, of wildfire danger. About 25 counties — all in the southern or central part of the state — at a high risk, or three out of four. At high risk, fires can ignite easily and spread quickly and have the potential to become serious if they are not attacked early. At moderate risk, fires can start accidentally and also have the potential to become serious.
