Jodi Lawson Memorial Scholarship fundraiser set for Saturday

WYNNE — The fourth annual Jodi Lawson Memorial Scholarship fundraiser is coming up Saturday.

It will be held at the Bill Thomas Tech Center, starting at 4:30 p.m.

“She excelled in almost everything she did. She was a very sports-oriented person, but she was also good academically. She was very active in church and after she was killed, our pastor suggested that we set up a memorial scholarship in her name,” said Lawson’s mother, Joanne Lawson. “Of course, my husband, Larry, and I were all for it. We said, yes, let’s do it. That’s how this came about. We really didn’t start these fundraisers until about four years ago and it was in 1998 when she was killed. God has really blessed it and we’ve put several through college or several have completed college using the scholarship.”

The fundraiser includes a fish fry, silent auction, live auction and entertainment.

The Jodi Lawson Scholarship benefits those attending a private, Christian college or university.

One thing about the Assembly of God colleges that this is for, they do offer degrees in everything. You can absolutely get a theological degree and continue in ministry. But ministry is not just speaking behind a pulpit,” said Neda Hodges. “Ministry is out in the public. Ministry is hands on. Ministry is in every way. So this is developing young people to go out into the world and become godly leaders.”

Tickets are $15 for the fish fry.

Brian Frames and the Consuming Fire Praise Band will provide the entertainment.

The live auction, featuring Philip Witcher, will begin at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
