HOXIE, Ark. — Hoxie Mayor Tim Taylor, after threatening to resign Tuesday, submitted his resignation yesterday.

His resignation — and the resignation of city council member Jerry Decker — came as documents were presented to the Hoxie City Council Tuesday alleging the city exceeded its own self-imposed budget for lodging and food during travel.

In his resignation letter, Taylor said he is retiring from both his civilian employment with the U.S. Air Force Reserve and as mayor of Hoxie.

Taylor was seeking reelection and his name will remain on the November ballot. The Lawrence County Clerk’s Office said Taylor has not officially withdrawn from the race. The Arkansas State Board of Election Commissioners said it is too late to change the ballots because they have already been prepared for early, military and overseas voting.

The Hoxie City Council can appoint an interim mayor to serve for the rest of the year. However, if Taylor were to win the election, he would not be eligible to take office and the interim mayor could remain in office, the state Board of Election Commissioners said.
