GRAVETTE, Arkansas — The Wynne Lady Jackets suffered a heart-breaking season-ending loss Thursday.
Rayna Morgan’s infield hit with the bases load in the bottom of the seventh ended Wynne’s softball season. Malvern topped the Lady Jackets 7-6 in the first-round game in the Class 4A state softball tournament at Gravette.
Wynne led 6-5 entering the bottom of the seventh when Malvern’s Chasney Cooper led off the inning with a walk, stole second and third, and scored on an error to tie the game.
Kendall Watson reached on a single and courtesy runner Addi White moved into scoring position with a stolen base. A.J. Fike was intentionally walked and Bella Rosbury was hit by a pitch to load the bases, setting up Morgan’s game-winning hit.
Caty Moore, Katie Hodges, and Savannah Brown each had two hits for Wynne, who ended the season with a record of 15-8.
Meanwhile, the Carlisle High School softball team has forfeited all of its games for the 2024 season and withdrawn from the 2A state tournament because of the use of an ineligible player. The Arkansas Activities Association says the school self-reported the violation.
B.J. Greene, the Carlisle athletic director, noted that the issue involved paperwork and that neither the coaches nor players were at fault.
The Lady Bison were 22-6 on the season. They were scheduled to play Mount Vernon-Enola in the first round of the Class 2A state softball tournament at Palestine-Wheatley yesterday.
