CHERRY VALLEY — Cross County High School has announced Derek Harrell as the new head boys’ basketball coach. Harrell brings 20 years of coaching experience at both the high school and collegiate levels, demonstrating a strong commitment to excellence and athlete development.
Harrell’s coaching career highlights include leading Lonoke High School to two state championships in 1998-99 and 1999-2000. His teams consistently achieved remarkable records, with the 2000 team finishing the season at 27-6 and being ranked number three overall in the state. His leadership earned him numerous accolades, including District Coach of the Year awards.
In his most recent role as athletic director at Marion School District, Harrell oversaw a significant transformation in the athletic department. He managed over 850 athletes and 50 district coaches while leading major renovations, such as constructing new sports facilities and upgrading existing ones. Under his leadership, the Marion School District secured state championships in boys’ basketball in 2019 and baseball in 2022.
“I am really excited about having this opportunity to coach basketball at Cross County,” coach Harrell said. “I look forward to meeting with players and being involved in such a great community.”
Coach Harrell said he builds his coaching philosophy on three pillars – hustle, defense, and pride.
“I want my players to give great effort in everything we do both on and off the court,” Harrell said. “I also want to be great defensively, and for the players to take pride in what they are doing. I want them to be proud of who they are and know they are representing Cross County everywhere.”
Athletic director Cody Goulart expressed enthusiasm about Harrell’s appointment, saying, “Derek Harrell’s extensive experience and track record of success make him the ideal choice for our school. We are confident in his ability to lead our boys’ basketball team to new heights and inspire our athletes to achieve their best.”
