FEMA will not be constructing a group site to house residents displaced by the March 31 tornado after all. Wynne Mayor Jennifer Hobbs made the announcement during last night’s city council meeting. Hobbs said FEMA has been able to place enough manufactured homes on private property to house some 48 residents by the end of the month.

At the outset of the meeting, the Arkansas Municipal League recognized Sen. Ronald Caldwell (R-Wynne) with a Distinguished Legislator Award.

In other news, the council approved three ordinances last night. Ordinances streamlining the city’s building permit process and updating floodplain management will take effect immediately. Another ordinance establishing the position of fire marshal advanced to a third and final reading next month.

Aldermen approved a new personnel handbook and a request from Public Works Director Jeff Hood to purchase 10 additional open-top bins. The total cost of the bins is nearly $57,000 but is expected to be recouped through rentals.

The council also approved the seeking of bids to repair the road at the Wynne Sports Complex and the purchase of a police cruiser to replace one destroyed in the tornado. The city has received $30,500 from insurance to purchase a Dodge Charger. FEMA will pay 75% of the remaining cost of the vehicle.

Reports were also presented from parks & rec, Wynne Water Utilities, public works, and the police and fire departments.
