EASTERN ARKANSAS — An extreme heat warning is in effect at least through Friday, but National Weather Service forecasters say that warning will most likely extend into next week.

Temperatures themselves could exceed 100 degrees this weekend and perhaps early next week.

Heat index values will be over 100 degrees and could reach as high as 110 to 115 within the next week.

Officials say heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events, such as what is expected in east and northeast Arkansas in the next week.

Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors, especially older residents.

Meanwhile, about 40 of Arkansas’ 75 counties are now under an active burn ban. That includes Arkansas, Desha, Independence, Prairie, Sharp, White and Woodruff counties in eastern Arkansas.

All of the state is currently under a moderate risk — a two out of four — of wildfire danger, according to the Arkansas Forestry Commission.

Under a moderate risk, fires can start accidentally and have the potential to become serious. Residents are asked to use caution if they choose to burn.

All burning is prohibited in counties under an active burn bans. Those bans will remain in effect until conditions improve.
