Drivers urged to use caution following deer crashes

Deer are most active at dawn and in the evening hours, when drivers are encouraged to use caution.

CROSS COUNTY — The Cross County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to use caution after deputies responded to five crashes involving deer over the last three days. No injuries to drivers were reported.

According to Consumer Reports, deer are most active at dawn and between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Drivers are encouraged to use their high beams, when possible, during those times.

State Farm said risky driving behavior, such as speeding or using a phone while driving, can increase the chance of an animal strike. Consumer Reports said the best ways to avoid hitting a deer include reducing speed, staying alert, being aware of surroundings, braking without attempting to swerve and wearing a seat belt.

Drivers are also reminded that deer often travel in groups, so seeing one deer near the road could mean others are close by. Drivers who hit a deer should safely move their vehicle off the road, if possible, and contact law enforcement to report the crash.
