Daylight saving time reminder: Change smoke alarm batteries, fire department offers assistance

This weekend marks the start of Daylight saving time (DST) meaning clocks spring forward one hour early on Sunday morning.

The time change is also a reminder for residents to change the batteries in their smoke alarms.

Aaron Mears, fire prevention coordinator for the Wynne Fire Department, said firefighters will gladly assist people in the community who struggle to change the batteries for themselves.

“This time of year we start getting calls from the elderly who are unable to get on the chairs or ladders or we prefer them not to, and just call us instead,” he said. “That is an option. You can call the fire department if you are injured or unable to get on a chair or ladder to reach those smoke detectors to change your batteries.”

Mears said the time change is not the only time you may need to change the batteries in your smoke alarms.

“If your smoke alarm starts chirping or small little beeps, even though it’s not Daylight Saving Time, that means your batteries are dying,” he said. “First step, you just need to figure out what kind of smoke detector you have and what kind of battery it takes.

“If you’re unsure and you can’t get it down, call us at the fire department and we’ll send a guy over and get it down,” Mears added. “We’ll tell you everything you need to know about it so you can get new batteries and we can get it put in for you.”
