CHERRY VALLEY — The Cross County School District is not going to build new baseball or softball fields, but they will have new ones.
“The district is not building baseball and softball fields. However, the City of Cherry Valley is building baseball and softball fields right now of which we will eventually move and use there,” said Cross County Superintendent Dr. Nathan Morris. “Where they currently are on that, the outfield fence on both the baseball and softball are up. Very nice looking green corrugated metal. They look sharp.
“The left field and right field lines down to where the dugouts will be are completed,” Dr. Morris continued. “I think the next steps… are design of dugouts and then implementing those and then coming around with the backstops. They’ve done a lot of dirt work out there that has been contracted out. It’s quickly becoming time to get good implementation of grass.”
Dr. Morris said the new location includes a renovated baseball field and a new softball field located on grounds that were once the Cherry Valley Elementary School.
“The baseball field is sitting where the baseball field has always sat,” he said. “The softball field is going to be completely new. It sits adjacent to the baseball field and just to the south of the food pantry in a little section there. The home plates will not sit back-to-back, but very, very close to one another.”
In related news yesterday, the Cross County baseball Thunderbirds and Lady T-Birds fell to Buffalo Island Central.
The T-Birds fell to BIC 3-1. Cole Johnson pitched for Cross County, allowing four hits and zero earned runs. Braydon McFarland recorded a double. The Lady T-Birds dropped a doubleheader 10-5 and 6-4.
Cross County baseball and softball were scheduled to travel to Marmaduke today, weather depending.
