Cross County School Board appoints new board member, reviews academic data

Lakeisha Jones was appointed last night to complete the term of her uncle, the late Craig Walker, on the Cross County School Board. Cross County Circuit Clerk Rhonda Sullivan swore Jones in upon her appointment. Jones is a 2004 Cross County High School graduate.

The Zone 7 seat will be up for re-election in March. Board member Ashley Armstrong was also elected last night to serve as secretary, a position Walker held at the time of his death in June.

In his report to the board, Superintendent Dr. Nathan Morris said the district’s enrollment as of yesterday was 688 students plus 54 students in the co-op-run Pre-K, an increase of 50 students from the third quarter average. Dr. Morris then gave an update on several campus projects.

District Executive Master Teacher Mindy Searcy reported on the 2023 ACT Aspire data, the last year that students will take that particular test. Reading scores were up in both the elementary and high schools while both schools decreased in math. Both schools met or beat the state average in reading and math except for third grade in reading and 10th grade in math. Cross County High School may serve as a pilot for the writing test in October.

In other news, the Cross County School Board approved a bid from Scott Petroleum of Newport and a resolution to allow the superintendent to approve board-to-board transfers.
