Cross County Conservation District holds elections for board of directors

There is another election underway in Cross County besides the primary election. That’s for members of the Cross County Conservation District Board of Directors.

Lamar Rolland, manager of the Cross County Conservation District, said eligible landowners can vote for up to three positions on the board.

“Our board members are the liaison, the outreach, the directors of our commission that help approve, disapprove, facilitate, and participate in local land meetings with our partners to reach out to the public, the agri producers about soil and water usage, conservation, and best management practices,” she said. “Every three years, we hold an election. … Those that are voted in will be under a three-year term. Two members of the board membership are appointed. They have been appointed by the State of Arkansas for years, but this year there has been a change and the district appoints the board membership.”

Voting will be done in the Cross County Conservation District office through next Tuesday, March 5. Those casting ballots must be eligible voters and Cross County landowners. Rolland noted there are four eligible candidates for the election, but only three available positions.

Rolland said the Cross County Conservation District serves a number of purposes including partnering with USDA agency partners such as the Farm Service Agency (FSA) and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

“We were once called the Soil and Water Commission,” she said. “We work with our partners, especially NRCS in soil conservation and water conservation. We are just in partnership with them.”

The Cross County Conservation District office is located in the Ridgeview shopping center on U.S. Highway 64. For questions, call 870-238-3285.
