Cats’ story inspires effort to help stray animals

WYNNE — The Cross County Veterinary Clinic made the decision to humanely euthanize two male cats found injured at Wynne Walmart.

The clinic said both cats tested positive for feline immunodeficiency virus, or FIV, and were also suffering from other injuries.

The cats’ presence was brought to the attention of the clinic several days ago, and traps were set to help contain them. The clinic said tests Wednesday confirmed both cats had FIV and that the decision was made to prevent further suffering and reduce the risk of the disease spreading to other outdoor cats.

The clinic said the decision was not made lightly, but it believed it was in the best interest of the cats and the outdoor cat population.

The cats’ story has inspired organizers of an upcoming low-cost spay and neuter clinic to work to help other stray cats in the area.

Keeli Smith, an organizer for the clinic, said spare cat traps are needed to help provide veterinary services to feral cats during the clinic, which is set for Aug. 18-20 at the Wynne Sports Complex. Anyone who would like to help with the effort is asked to contact Smith by text or through social media.
