Arkansas Legislative Panel approves $65.8M for school rebuilding; early start possible for Wynne High School

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas — Another step into a possible early start to rebuilding Wynne High School was taken yesterday. An Arkansas Legislative Panel endorsed the State Department of Education’s request for $65.8 million in state-restricted reserve funds Tuesday. The funds are for the state’s share in public school funding for building construction and major renovation projects.

In a voice vote, the Joint Budget Committee’s Performance Evaluation and Expenditure Review Subcommittee recommended the Joint Budget Committee approve the State Department of Education’s request.

The program is a financial partnership between the state and public school districts to share the cost of school facilities construction and major renovations.

The legislature in 2023 authorized the transfer of $500 million of state surplus funds into the Restricted Reserve Funds for Educational Facilities Set-Asides to provide the state’s share of public school building projects over five to six years. Districts can apply for funds every two years.
